Urban Climate Under Change [UC]²


Modul B 3DO (Three-Dimensional Observation of Atmospheric Processes in Cities) - Subproject 1: Three-dimensional Monitoring of Atmospheric Processes in Berlin

In subproject 1 already available long-term observation (LTO) data will be processed and new LTO data will be collected and supplemented with measurements from intense observation periods (IOPs). These data sets will be used for validation of the newly developed urban climate model (task of module A) as well as for direct applications. For this purpose new concepts and analytical tools will be evolved, tested and implemented in an integration platform. Numerical modelling for Berlin will be carried out for selected time periods.

Urban Climate and Heat Stress in mid-latitude cities in view of climate change (UCaHS)


The DFG Research Unit addresses the scientific questions related to heat stress in mid-latitude cities by a multi- and interdisciplinary approach involving climatologists, urban geographers and hydrologists, physicians, architects, physicists and engineers, urban planners and social scientists.

“Heat waves in Berlin, Germany – Urban climate modifications“

The DFG funded research project “Heat waves in Berlin, Germany – Urban climate modifications“ (“HeatWaves”) aims at investigating how urban structures modify regional heat waves, both spatially and temporally. A central goal will be to understand which processes lead to such modifications.

The project focuses on the Brunnenviertel in Berlin-Wedding as a pilot area for climate adaptation measures using participatory structures.

Since more than 25 years our research group is operating an urban climate observation network in Berlin. Within the research unit "Urban Climate and Heat Stress" (UCaHS) the network was extended and harmonized.
